Synthetic Soft Tissues for Medical Education Models (2003 FY 16)
Research is beginning in the development of a new type of synthetic
soft tissue that will feel, look, and respond to surgical techniques
like natural tissues. The technology for development of this invention
will be an extension and/or modification of the existing technology
for making synthetic mechanical analogue tissues for mechanical testing
models. The first application of this technology will be the development
of a medical education model synthetic intervertebral spinal disc.
At this point in time, the synthetic soft tissues for medical education models
are not to be used as an implant in the human body. Their purpose is to be
the key soft tissue structures in production of synthetic analogues of human
spines for practice surgery by orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons
